The most common criticism of the Rolex Explorer II 226570 is that the bezel does not rotate.
Prospective buyers say it as if they are identifying a flaw. Watch reviewers mention it as a caveat. Forum threads fill with comments about how the Explorer II would be better if Rolex just gave it a rotating bezel like the GMT-Master II. The argument goes that a rotating bezel adds functionality, and functionality is always better than less functionality.
This argument is wrong. The fixed bezel on the 226570 is not a limitation that Rolex failed to address. It is a deliberate design decision that makes the 226570 better at its specific job than any rotating bezel alternative would be. Not different. Better.

This piece goes deeper on the engineering logic, the aesthetic argument, and the daily ownership reality that makes the fixed bezel the right choice for a watch built around GMT functionality.
The Engineering Case
To understand why the fixed bezel is correct for the 226570, you need to understand what the bezel actually does on this watch versus what it does on a rotating bezel watch.
What the Fixed Bezel Does
On the 226570, the bezel carries a 24-hour scale engraved in two-hour increments from 1 to 24. The scale is a reference for reading the 24-hour GMT hand. You align the GMT hand against the bezel scale to read your second time zone. That is the entire function of the bezel. It is a static reference scale, not an adjustable tool.
For a static reference scale to work correctly, it must stay in exactly the position Rolex set it at the factory. The 24-hour scale on the 226570 bezel is calibrated precisely so that 12 on the bezel corresponds to noon, 24 corresponds to midnight, and every hour increment falls exactly where it should. If the bezel moved, the scale would be wrong. The second time zone reading would be inaccurate. The watch would fail at its primary complication.
A fixed bezel is not just acceptable for this function. It is required. The only way to make the 24-hour GMT scale work reliably is to make the bezel that carries it immovable.
Why a Rotating Bezel Would Break the GMT Function
The GMT-Master II solves the same problem differently. Its rotating bezel carries a 24-hour scale, and the bezel itself rotates to set the reference zone. The wearer rotates the bezel so that 12 aligns with their home time zone, then reads the second time zone against the bezel scale as the GMT hand tracks it.
This system works but it introduces a failure mode that the Explorer II's fixed bezel eliminates entirely. The rotating bezel can be accidentally moved. A bump against a door frame, a sleeve catching the bezel edge, a moment of inattention while setting the bezel, any of these can shift the bezel out of position without the wearer noticing. The second time zone reading becomes wrong and the wearer may not realize it until they have already made a scheduling error or missed a coordination point.
On the 226570, this failure mode does not exist. The bezel cannot move. The 24-hour scale is always exactly where it should be. You never need to check whether the bezel is still correctly set because it cannot become incorrectly set.
For anyone using the GMT function seriously, as I do daily for Zulu time tracking in my work, this reliability is not a minor convenience. It is the functional foundation that makes the watch trustworthy.
The Calibre 3285 and the Independent Hour Hand
The reason the fixed bezel works so well on the 226570 is that the watch pairs it with an independently adjustable local hour hand. When you travel across time zones, you push the crown to position two and jump the local hour hand forward or back in one-hour increments. The 24-hour GMT hand keeps tracking your reference zone through the entire adjustment. The minute hand and seconds never stop.
The result is that the 226570 handles time zone changes entirely through the movement, not through the bezel. The bezel never needs to move because the watch does not require you to move it. All the adjustment happens inside the case via the independent hour hand.
This is the engineering insight that most critics of the fixed bezel miss. They compare the Explorer II to the GMT-Master II as if both watches solve the same problem the same way. They do not. The GMT-Master II uses the bezel to set the reference zone. The 226570 uses the movement. The fixed bezel is not a limitation on a system that needs adjustment. It is the correct choice for a system that does not.
The Aesthetic Case
The engineering argument for the fixed bezel is strong enough to stand alone. But there is an equally compelling aesthetic argument that most critics ignore entirely.
Steel Against Steel
The fixed bezel on the 226570 is machined from the same Oystersteel as the case. It is brushed on the top surface with the same fine horizontal grain as the case top and lugs. The engraved 24-hour numerals and markings have a slightly different finish from the surrounding brushed surface, catching light at specific angles that make the scale readable without magnification.
The visual effect is that the bezel reads as an integral part of the case rather than a separate component attached to it. The watch looks like it was machined from a single piece of steel rather than assembled from discrete parts. This is an illusion, the bezel is a separate component, but it is a well-constructed illusion that gives the 226570 a visual coherence that rotating bezel watches struggle to achieve.
A rotating bezel, by its nature, has to look like something that moves. There is a gap between the bezel and the case, a click mechanism that implies rotation, a visual seam that tells the observer this piece is meant to turn. On the Submariner and GMT-Master II that seam is part of the design identity. On the Explorer II, the absence of that seam is part of its identity.
The Case for Restraint
The 226570 is a watch that does not announce itself. The steel bezel, the black dial, the brushed case, the absence of color except the orange GMT hand. Everything about the watch's visual language is about restraint. Nothing is there for decoration. Every element either does a job or enables something that does a job.
A ceramic rotating bezel in blue, red, green, or black would change the visual language of the watch entirely. It would make the Explorer II look more like a GMT-Master II, which means it would look more like a watch whose identity is built around its bezel color. The Explorer II's identity has never been built around a bezel color. It has been built around the orange hand, the fixed scale, and the tool watch DNA that goes back to the 1655.
Giving the 226570 a rotating ceramic bezel would make it a different watch. Not a better one.
The Bezel and the Orange Hand
There is a specific visual relationship between the fixed steel bezel and the orange GMT hand that a rotating ceramic bezel would disrupt. The steel bezel is visually neutral. It recedes. The orange hand is the only warm color element on the dial, and against the steel bezel and black dial it has the visual field almost entirely to itself.
Put a colored ceramic bezel on the 226570 and the orange hand has to compete with it. The Pepsi bezel has red and blue. The Batman has black and blue. Either would create a color competition on the dial that the current design avoids entirely. The fixed steel bezel is the negative space that makes the orange hand work as a singular accent. Remove the negative space and the accent becomes noise.
The Ownership Case
Engineering and aesthetics are arguments for why the fixed bezel is correct in principle. The ownership case is about what living with the fixed bezel actually feels like across the full range of daily wear situations.
The Watch You Never Have to Manage
Every watch with a rotating bezel requires occasional management. You check whether the bezel is still where you set it. You reset it when it has drifted. You develop a habit of verifying the position before you rely on it for a time zone reading. This is a small thing but it is a real thing, and over months and years of daily wear it accumulates into a low-level maintenance habit that comes with the watch.
The 226570 does not require this habit. The bezel is always where it should be. You never check it because there is nothing to check. The second time zone is always accurate as long as you have set the GMT hand correctly, which is a one-time-per-trip adjustment rather than an ongoing management task.
Over two years of daily wear I have never once thought about the position of my bezel. It has never been wrong. It has never needed correcting. That is a form of reliability that is invisible until you have worn a rotating bezel watch and experienced the alternative.
Physical Durability
The fixed bezel has no moving parts beyond the case itself. There is no click mechanism to wear out, no spring to lose tension, no ceramic insert to chip or crack. The bezel is a machined steel ring with an engraved scale. It will look and function the same in 30 years as it does today, assuming normal service intervals for the rest of the watch.
Rotating bezels are more complex. The ceramic Cerachrom insert on modern Rolex bezels is extremely durable, but the click mechanism underneath it is a mechanical system with finite longevity. Over decades of daily use, rotating bezels require more maintenance attention than fixed ones. For a watch you plan to wear every day for the rest of your life and eventually pass to your children, the fixed bezel is the lower-maintenance long-term choice.
The Scratch Argument
The fixed steel bezel on the 226570 scratches. Mine has several visible marks from two years of daily wear. This is the criticism most often leveled at the steel bezel relative to ceramic options, and it is valid as far as it goes.
What the criticism misses is that scratches on a steel bezel are reversible. A watchmaker can polish or refinish a steel bezel surface. Scratches on a ceramic bezel are not reversible. Ceramic is scratch-resistant but not scratch-proof, and when ceramic scratches the marks are permanent.
The steel bezel that scratches over time is honest about what it is. It is a tool watch component that accumulates evidence of use. The scratches on my bezel are a record of two years of daily wear across Alaska, military service, family travel, and ordinary life. I have no interest in polishing them out. But I could if I wanted to. That option does not exist with ceramic.
The Fixed Bezel as a Statement
The fixed bezel on the 226570 is not a compromise. It is not a cost-saving measure. It is not a feature Rolex left out because they could not figure out how to add it.
It is a design decision that Rolex has maintained across 55 years and five references because it is correct for what the Explorer II is. A GMT watch built around an independently adjustable hour hand and a fixed reference scale does not need a rotating bezel. Adding one would complicate the design without improving the function, compromise the visual identity without improving the aesthetics, and introduce a maintenance variable without improving the durability.
The critics who say the Explorer II would be better with a rotating bezel are describing a different watch. They may prefer that watch. They are welcome to buy it. The GMT-Master II exists and it is excellent.
But the Explorer II is not the GMT-Master II. It never has been. The fixed bezel is one of the clearest expressions of that distinction, and it is one of the reasons the 226570 is the watch it is rather than a cheaper version of something else.
