OWN THE WATCH
Watch Review
Hey {{first_name|Reader}}! It’s been forever since I did a watch review. I’m super pumped for this one and glad to have you here!
You're looking for your first mechanical watch. Or maybe your fifth. But you want something you'll actually wear, not something that sits in a box because you're too afraid to scratch it.
You want a dive watch that looks good, feels solid, and doesn't cost what a used car costs.
The Monterey Blacktip Pro Diver might be exactly what you're looking for.
I've been wearing this watch since early February. Three weeks straight without taking it off during -40°F weather in Fairbanks, Alaska. Wore it to South Korea. Wore it in the gym lifting weights and running. Wore it cleaning around the house. Wore it to work.
Here's what I learned.

Monterey Blacktip Pro Diver

Strap: Black stitched silicone with curved lug ends
FIRST IMPRESSIONS

My Peloton partner
It looks like a Submariner. Let's just say it and get that out in the open.
But here's a big difference: you're not afraid of it getting dinged. You're not afraid to wear it. You're not babying a $10K investment. You're wearing a $359 watch that can take a beating.
And it feels like it should cost more. I'd pay $500 for this watch without hesitation.
The design is clean and straightforward. The proportions are right. 40mm case size is perfect, big enough to have presence, not so big that it feels like metal weighing down your wrist. The crown guard is excellent. This has become a must-have feature for me on hard-worn watches.
The sapphire crystal is flawless after two months of abuse. No scratches. No chips. Holds up incredibly well.
THE MOVEMENT
Seiko NH35A automatic. Workhorse movement. Reliable.
Accuracy: -20 to +40 seconds per day is the spec. Mine runs right in that range. Not chronometer-level, but perfectly acceptable for a $359 watch.
Power reserve: About 41 hours. Take it off Friday night, it'll be dead by Sunday morning. (can verify) Standard for this movement.
No issues. Winds smoothly. Sets easily. Does what it's supposed to do.
WEARABILITY

Korean BBQ in South Korea
40mm is the sweet spot. Fits my wrist perfectly. Doesn't feel too small or too big. Doesn't snag on shirt cuffs. Comfortable all day.
The weight is balanced. Substantial enough to feel like a real watch, not so heavy that you're constantly aware of it.
I wore this for three weeks straight in -40°F weather, dumped on by two feet of show. No issues. Kept running. No condensation under the crystal. No problems.
Wore it in the gym. Lifting, running, sweating. The watch held up fine.
Wore it traveling. Through airports, on planes, overseas. Beat it up. Still looks great.
THE STRAP
(THE ONLY REAL ISSUE)
The black stitched silicone strap it comes with is good, but not perfect.
The issue: It traps moisture when you sweat. After workouts or long days, there's some white salt buildup under the strap. You have to scrub it off occasionally.
The good news: The strap shows no sign of weakness or degradation. It's holding up. It's just not the most breathable option.
The solution: Easy to swap out. Standard lug width. Throw a NATO on it or a different rubber strap and you're fine. (It also comes with two different bracelets. Just sayin’…)
I kept it on the stock strap because I wanted to test it as-is. If you're buying this watch, budget another $20-30 for a NATO or perlon strap if you sweat a lot.
THE LUME
(BEST FEATURE)
The lume is incredible.
I wore this to bed during our trip in Homer, Alaska. My wife asked me to take it off because it was too bright.

The lume is insane.
That's how good the lume is.
You can see this watch in complete darkness. The indices glow. The hands glow. It's not just decoration—it's actually functional.
If you're looking for a watch you can read at night without turning on a light, this is it.
WHAT IT DOES WELL
Looks similar to a Submariner, costs $359
Sapphire crystal holds up to abuse
40mm size is perfect for most wrists
Crown guard protects the crown (essential for hard wear)
Lume is legitimately excellent
Seiko NH35A movement is reliable and serviceable
You're not afraid to wear it
WHAT COULD BE BETTER
Strap traps moisture (easy fix: swap it out)
Accuracy is fine, not amazing (but expected for this movement)
Not original (it looks similar to a Sub, like many other dive watches)around it)
WHO SHOULD BUY THIS

Lifting weights
Buy this if:
You're looking for your first mechanical watch
You want a dive watch you'll actually wear
You're tired of Seiko SKX recommendations (great watch, but everyone has one)
You want something that looks expensive but doesn't cost a mortgage payment
You want a watch you can beat up without worrying
Skip this if:
You want something completely original
You need Swiss-level accuracy (this is a Seiko movement)
You're looking for an investment piece (this is a wear-it-daily watch)
THE VERDICT
This is an excellent $359 dive watch.
It punches above its weight. It looks good. It wears well. It holds up to abuse. The lume is legitimately great.
The strap issue is minor and easily fixed. The movement is reliable. The build quality is solid.
If you're looking for your first mechanical watch and want to be different from the Seiko bros out there, Monterey is an amazing option.
I'd recommend anyone add this to their collection or start their collection with it.
FULL DISCLOSURE
I received this watch as part of a partnership with Monterey. They sent it to me for free in exchange for an honest review.
But here's the truth: I would pay my own money for this watch.
In fact, I already bought another Monterey watch with my own money. (Want me to review that one next? Let me know.)
Partnership or not, this is a solid watch at a great price. I'm not going to recommend something I wouldn't buy myself.
