Fun fact. The earliest known example of humans measuring the passage of time via the current sexagesimal system (i.e. numeral system with sixty as a base) relates to about 2,000 BC. The Egyptians divided the day in two cycles of twelve hours and measured the time with sundials for daytime and water clocks for nighttime.

THE MAIN THING

Sam Altman and a $480,000 Greubel Forsey Invention Piece 1 Watch

AI is the future. Whether you want to admit it or not, it's a fact. Sam Altman is on the cutting edge of AI. He's the CEO of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT (and other things). But we're not here to talk about that today. This is about watches, remember?

What we ARE here to talk about is what Sam was wearing. Specifically, during a 2018 interview. Through much internet sleuthing, watch nerds determined that Sam was wearing a $480,000 Greubel Forsey Invention Piece 1. This watch is 1 of 33 ever made. Wow.

Sam appears to be a humble guy, but he enjoys luxurious things. He has a few estates, racecars, etc. But let's dive into the Greubel Forsey watch for a bit. Until Sam's appearance, I'd never heard of this brand

This watch looks like a concept watch. It’s like some experimental thing. But that's the point. This watch is huge. It's 17 mm thick. (for reference, a "normal" watch is usually less than 12 mm thick)

So how do you even read this thing?

Reminiscent of orbiting astronomical indicators, the displays reinforce the link between the mechanism and the indication. Two triangular indicators - red hours, blue minutes - show the time, while a sub-second dial (top left) and power reserve indicator complete the dial.

AI is here to stay. I think it’s going to impact the watch industry.

These are some generalized assumptions. For the most part, these anticipations apply to smartwatches.

  1. Time Traveler's Delight. AI time prediction algorithms can anticipate your schedule and adjust reminders accordingly. Imagine never being late for that important meeting or dinner date.

  2. Improved Health Tracking. AI algorithms can analyze biometric data to offer real-time insights. Some may include, fitness levels, stress levels, sleep quality, and overall well-being. It may enable users to make smarter and more informed health decisions.

  3. Predictive Maintenance. AI-powered predictive analytics can monitor watch performance. This could mean detecting potential issues or malfunctions early. Perhaps even go as far as recommending maintenance or repairs. Ideally, enhancing the longevity and reliability of watches.

  4. Smart Notifications. AI can intelligently manage notifications on watches. It can filter out irrelevant alerts. It could even prioritize important messages based on context, location, and user preferences.

  5. Innovative Designs. AI design tools can assist watch designers in creating unique and innovative designs. AI could optimize aesthetics, ergonomics, and functionality based on user feedback and market trends.

Summary

When it comes to AI, the future is unknown. We will likely see things we cannot even imagine. It’s an exciting yet scary time!

I’m not totally sure why AI would choose to wear its watch on the forearm. But, AI is way smarter than I am, so maybe I need to try it!
